It's the 4th night of Hanukkah 2020 and i was able to launch the Celebrate Hanukkah Alexa app in time! I had to remove the blessings being spoken with Alexa's phonetic Hebrew, but will have to figure that out before next year! i just wanted to get it out for this year. Each night has a little information about the history of Hanukkah with the Maccabees battle to reclaim the 2nd temple.
If you have time, check it out this year if you find it in time, and next year if the moment has past.
If you try it out, let me know if there is anything that would help make it better and more engaging. i'm waiting for Amazon to approve one modification to make the intro shorter instead of going into a long history, so people will have the option to listen to the background separately instead of every time they open the skill.
It currently has:
- a reflection on each night ending with the blessings
- a bracha for wine and bread
- option to hear the introductory information
- all in english
Next year, would like to add:
- Blessings beginning in Hebrew
- Audio clips instead of Alexa speaking it
- Dreidel information
- Dreidel interactive game
Would love to hear your thoughts, or even how you celebrate Hanukkah in the comments since i'm still fumbling around.
This year, my Mom had eye surgery a few times due to her retina detaching, so I've been staying with her to help out the past couple months. My Hanukkah has been quiet, and not how i imagined it. My hanukkiah is in another state, so i'm sad that i won't be seeing the beautiful glow of the candles, especially when the 8th night comes. At Moms, i'm surrounded by the Christmas influence. However, we watched the Love, Light, Hanukkah movie last night and she asked if i knew the Hanukkah blessings they were singing. Shamefully, i only was able to sing the beginning "Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Malak l'Olam" then, i didn't know what else there was. Was nice to see her interested though. Will have to work on knowing the blessings better in general.
Hope everyone is staying safe in the end of this 2020...
Bo Messiah bo!
